Can You Stay Put and Go with God!?
"...any of you that cannot renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple."
- Jesus (Luke 14.33)
No...just like the cliché of wanting to have our cake and eat it too, we cannot stay where we're at AND go with God at the same time. And isn’t this at the root of the human struggle!? We want it all!
We want adventure – but not with all that risk.
We want comfort – but not without some excitement in our life.
We seek financial stability – and like to spend (or worse yet, charge it).
We want to enjoy ourselves – and not worry about sinning.
We seek forgiveness but are less inclined to spiritual disciplines designed to create holiness.
And so, into our torn tension between stability and surprise Jesus interjects sobering absolutes.
Here’s one. “...any of you that cannot renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple." - Jesus (Luke 14.33) Without question and with plenty of Biblical history as witness God calls us to adjust our life to him; to say “kaput” to staying put and put everything at the feet of Jesus.
But…here’s the paradox. By renouncing all that we have, we gain everything! By following on his adventure of discipleship, we gain stability. By letting go of ourselves, we gain our self as God created and redeemed it!
Come Sunday to be equipped and inspired for new paths that lead to familiar places!
